A change of pace

Hard at work on our tarea (homework)

For the past 2 weeks, we have been enjoying a very relaxed schedule. Spanish classes from 8-12, cook some lunch and answer emails (when the Internet works, which it doesn’t when it rains, which it’s been doing a lot of lately). We’ve been enjoying a daily siesta for about an hour (ok, some days, more like 2 hours–we’re really trying to embrace the culture!) Then, we’ll go on a walk or work on homework and eventually, come home and cook dinner.

But, all that is about to change! On Friday, we moved into the volunteer housing above Arte Del Mundo, where we’ll be living/working for the next month. We start volunteering on Monday which goes from 2:30 to 6 every day and then in the evenings, we may be teaching adult English classes from 7-8:30.

Our lovely room!

Living in the volunteer housing is great! It’s simple living but has everything you need and is super cheap ($250 a month total). We have a shared kitchen but it’s rather large and there are 2 shared bathrooms. It looks like there are about 8-10 volunteers at any given time, but, the organization does a great job of shared responsibility so everything is always nice and clean.

So, the next 2 weeks will be very busy since we’ll still have 4 hours of Spanish every morning but then, after that we’ll just be volunteering in the afternoons. So, you may not hear from us much in the next two weeks but know that we are having a blast playing with the kiddos from Banos and helping them to learn to read good…(Zoolander anyone?)
