Mission for a Church, Part 2

Last night we had our meeting and it was very interesting.

Basically, we decided that we all agree on the core values of a mission statement but that we need to get an Action Plan in place to fully develop our mission statement.

So, the mission statement that we decided to start working with is:

“To Grow and Mature as Disciples of Christ so as to Attract others to become Disciples themselves.”

I actually really like this one. Pastor was just speaking and said this in passing but I wrote it down and we all agreed rather quickly that this encompasses a lot of what we think the mission should include. Some key ideas that helped us choose this mission statement.

  • We only have the power to change ourselves. So, we cannot say we are going to go out and make people disciples. All we can do is Act in a way that makes people question why we act the way we do.
  • Being True Disciples of Christ will lead us to more outreach. We realized that we cannot just say we are church that is about Service. That leads to more “programs.” What we need is a culture shift whereby members become aware of what being a Disciple truly means and put in place the opportunities for people to live that mission.
  • We want to Attract people to our church because of Who we are, not what we say or the programs we have.  When we were studying 1 Peter, we talked about the verse “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect…” We need to live our lives in a way that makes people wonder about us–To see that we are different and wonder why.

So, what do you think of this mission statement?
