Time Tithe Review

Well Easter has come and gone, the eggs have all been found and eaten, and it’s time for me to review my Lenten Time Tithe. Just to recap, over the 40 days of Lent, I pledged to tithe 10% of my time to the Lord’s work which came out to a total of 96 hours. So, how did I do? Well, unfortunately,  I didn’t quite make it. I ended up with only 80 hours, a whole 16 hours short. As disappointed as I am that I didn’t meet my goal, I am thrilled with how much I have grown over the past 40 days.
One of the things I am most pleased with is that having this goal in mind made doing service a lot easier. I will admit, there were days I didn’t want to get up and go serve. I think we all feel that sometimes: “Ask someone else. I’m busy and need time for me.They don’t really need my help.”  But, by having the goal in mind, I got out of bed and every time I returned home from an event, I was so excited and fired up. I can’t imagine if I had missed it! While I don’t think that we need to do a certain number of hours or good deeds each week (you know, that whole “saved by grace through faith” thing…), having this goal did help me get over the excuses and go serve.
It also really helped me to feel like I could spend time doing things I normally would put on the back burner. Reading the Bible, writing blogs, spending time working on documents for church meetings. I always felt a little guilty spending too much time on these items because there are always more pressing things to do. But, with the time tithe, it forced me to re-organize my priorities. Spending an hour researching a blog post was not a waste a time. I know that reading the bible is never a waste of time but there’s always so many other things I feel like I need to get done. Having the goal helped me to feel free (and compelled) to read it. It’s amazing that those other things still managed to get done or weren’t really that important.  🙂
I am not sure if I will continue to track my hours of service in the future. I may, just so I have an idea of how close I am coming to 10%, but, in any case, I hope that this experience sticks with me and encourages me to serve more and more.

Great job, Abby. Every minute we spend in God’s word is time well spent. I’m very proud of you and love you. Christine
